There are two distinct King Salmon runs on the Kenai River. The first run begins the last week of May, peaks in mid June, and is generally the smaller run. The fish in this run average 20-40 pounds. (There are exceptions to this as the world record King was caught May 17 and weighed 97 lbs, 4 oz.). At this time of year the water level is quite low so the most productive way to fish the local rivers is from a driftboat. |

The Kenai River is famous for having the
largest strain of King Salmon in the world. Fish average 25-60 pounds with Kings over 80
pounds being caught every year. The second run begins in early June and peaks around July 20. The last day to fish for King Salmon on the Kenai River is July 31. The second run King Salmon average 30-50 pounds. Higher water levels make fishing from a power boat more successful. |
